Dupatta Pinning: “How-To” for our South Asian Brides
Written by: Gracie Gillis
Dupattas are more than just a piece of fabric; they’re a statement of elegance and tradition for South Asian brides. Whether draped casually over your shoulder or styled with meticulous precision, how you pin your dupatta can transform your look from simple to stunning. This blog covers an easy, innovative way to pin your dupatta on your wedding day!
Pinning your dupatta not only secures it in place but also adds structure to your outfit and allows you to incorporate a stunning statement piece. Done right, your dupatta complements your wedding attire rather than overpowering it. The right pinning technique will highlight your ensemble and provide a flattering silhouette. Here’s a breakdown:
Choosing your Dupatta: Selecting the right dupatta for your special day is crucial! Lighter fabrics like chiffon or georgette work beautifully for a flowy look, while heavier fabrics like silk can create a more formal appearance.
Styling tips to consider when choosing your dupatta
Experiment with Textures: Dupattas are a beautiful statement piece with a variety of options to complement your wedding attire! For instance, if you’re wearing a heavier outfit, consider choosing a dupatta made of lighter fabrics such as chiffon!
Play with Lengths: Don’t be afraid to try different lengths. A longer dupatta can create a more dramatic effect, while a shorter one can feel fresh and fun.
Color Coordination: Match your dupatta with a contrasting color to make it pop, or go for a monochromatic look for a sophisticated vibe.
Making it Easy: What’s the secret to a secure & comfortable dupatta placement? Hair extension clips!! This is a link to some we love! If you are a Beauty Marked bride who has booked Saree Draping services with our team, feel free to skip purchasing these clips & prepping your dupatta as this will be handled by your draper and included in your Bridal services with our team. If not, please be sure your dupatta is prepped for our hairstylists before your wedding services take place!
Prepping your Dupatta: Once you’ve purchased your extensions clips, you will want to sew the clips onto your dupatta. Here are some step by step instructions to follow as a guide:
Map out where you want the dupatta placed on your head. Be sure to consider the type of bridal hairstyling you will be doing (if choosing an updo - think about how high you want it and how the dupatta placement would look with this in mind).
Based on where you want the dupatta placed, make marks on the inside of the dupatta’s border for where the clips will need to be sewn. Depending on how heavy your dupatta is and where placement is, you may need anywhere from 3 - 6 clips sewn into the border with each clip about 1-2 inches apart from each other.
Sew the extension clips to the desired marked places. IMPORTANT: Make sure the side of the clip that opens up is facing down and the teeth of the clips are facing towards your dupatta. This will allow you to easily slide it into your hair and snap it into place when it’s time to put it on!
Dupatta pinning is an art, but we promise prepping it ahead of time with hair extensions clips makes it SO much easier and comfortable to wear during your wedding events! Get ready to turn heads on your special day!
